when i first heard this song by Ennio Morricone i had no idea it had come from the film Cuore di Mamma. i heard it first when i was at a concert with a friend, watching the stagehands set up for the opener. most venues will play a few popular songs over the main speaker to fill the time. instead, whoever was in charge of the music playing over the speakers chose to play this song on repeat for fifteen minutes. my friend and i didn’t talk during those fifteen minutes. we both unknowingly in unison stopped and observed. i watched one guy in the distance speaking indistinctly over a headset while he wrapped up some cable. i watched him drape the cable across the stage and, although his actions were kinetic, everything he did and everything around him felt in rhythm. after the concert i drove home played Ninna Nanna per Adulteri on repeat for the entirety of my drive home; about thirty minutes.
